The Rugby League Museum

After a visit to the New Zealand Rugby League headquarters yesterday - more on that in the coming weeks - I popped into Rugby League Museum, for a look.  I was lucky enough to be shown around by Museum Curator and 1961 Kiwi's Captain Don Hammond.

Even though there are many great items on display, from Albert Baskerville's All Golds contract through to a signed Kiwi's 2008 World Cup Winning Jersey, the centerpiece of the museum, has to be the Rugby League World Cup.  Don was kind enough to take my photo with the trophy and filled me in on its colourful history.

The Rugby League World Cup

First contested in 1954, the Trophy was shared between England and Australia, until six days before the final of the 1970 tournament, when it was fiendishly stolen from the Australian Team's Hotel in Bradford, England.  After initial investigations returned no leads, all hope was lost, and a replacement was hastily arranged.

There was no trace of the trophy until 1990 when unemployed father-of-four, Stephen Uttley stumbled on it in a ditch merely yards away from the surprised Bradford and Bingley Rugby League Club.

Although missing the cockerel that had previously adorned the lid and carrying a few additional scratches and dings around the base, the trophy was otherwise unharmed and ready to be presented back to Australia after their win in 1992.

In 2008, Nathan Cayless and the Kiwis won the Trophy, and it's colourful history continued when it was held aloft by yours truly yesterday afternoon.

If you want to see the Rugby League World Cup for yourself, head along to the Rugby League Museum, Rugby League House, 7 Beasley Avenue, Penrose, Auckland.  The museum is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11am-3pm and is well worth the price of admission.

Virtual Rugby - Pick the Score. Win a Meat Pack

You can have a go at Picking the Score on the Jimungo site.

Virtual Rugby - Draws in Semi Finals

With the Semi Finals and Final of the Rebel Sport Super 14 upon us, another season of skysport.co.nz Virtual Rugby is almost over.

I entered the Semi Final matches in to the system on Sunday morning, and ensured that the draw option as hidden from the skysport.co.nz Virtual Rugby Picks Page. On Thursday I received an email from one of our players pointing out that you can indeed have a draw in the Rebel Sport Super 14 Semi Finals.

Here is Sam's message.

Why don't you have the 'draw' option for the picks this weekend (Semifinals). I understand that only one team can go through, but the final result in the game can be a draw.

The rules say "If scores are level at full time in the Semi Final or Final, 20 minutes extra time (10 minutes each way) will be played. If scores are still level in the Semi Final, the team who scored the most tries will be declared the winner, or if still equal, the team who finished highest on the table in the round robin competition."

Thus meaning the score will still be a draw. Taking this into account shouldn't there be a draw option?

This is the first I have heard about a draw being a technical possibility in Finals play. So what to do...

As the games had been up since Sunday morning and many thousands of players had made their picks, and because it had never happened in the History of the tournament (thus far) we decided it was best to leave the match drawless for both semi's.

Here's hoping that Sam's email and this blog post don't tempt fate too much, or else we are going to have to make some tough decisions on Sunday morning.

I for one will have my fingers crossed that there is indeed a clear winner in each Semi Final.
